ROMDIEM

OBJECTIVE
The Roma community often faces discrimination and prejudice. People belonging to this community have suffered discrimination and injustice for many years, and it is important to recognize and address these problems. Problems concerning both the educational part, school dropout, lack of basic knowledge and social delinquency problems. The Roma have often faced difficulties in accessing education, health and work due to the prejudices and stereotypes that exist. The new generation of Roma is the one that will make the difference, they are more educated, more sophisticated with technology and extroversion and we are investing in them. In the annals of human history, there exists a chapter often overlooked, marginalized, and silenced – the story of the Roma Holocaust. Amidst the harrowing atrocities of the 20th century, where the darkness of authoritarianism and totalitarian regimes cast a shadow over Europe, the plight of the Roma people stands as a poignant testament to the depths of human suffering and resilience. During the dark years of World War II, the Roma, alongside their Jewish counterparts, faced a systematic campaign of persecution, discrimination, and extermination under the Nazi regime. Labeled as “Gypsies” and deemed unworthy of humanity, they were subjected to the horrors of concentration camps, forced labor, and mass murder. The ROMDIEM project addresses these needs through several specific objectives. Firstly, there is a critical need to document and preserve the testimonies of Roma Holocaust survivors and their descendants. These personal narratives are essential for creating a comprehensive historical record and for educational purposes. Increasing public awareness about the Roma Holocaust is also essential to combat ongoing discrimination and to promote understanding and empathy.
